Day 12 – A book you’ve read more than twice
Good Lord, where do I start!
I could list almost any Heinlein novel, The Lord of the Rings, Dune, John Carter of Mars, Ender’s Game, Lucifer’s Hammer, or countless others.
In the past year, I’ve purchased audio versions of several Heinlein novels to enjoy while in the car: Friday, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Stranger in a Strange Land and others.
Instead, for this post, I will use a book that I’ve recommended to people that weren’t huge SF fans, but willing to give it a try.
The Legacy of Heorot is a great SF re-telling of Beowolf. Nivens, Pournelle and Barnes take us to another world via a multi-generational starship that appears as paradise. Unfortunately, the long hibernation required has caused varying levels of brain damage among the colonists. Fortunately, the island they settle upon is peaceful with no threatening fauna or flora. In fact, the explorer tasked with insuring the group’s safety finds himself with little to do and no respect from the genius scientists in his charge. In fact, when danger finally makes an appearance, the others initially suspect their protector of creating it to justify his control over the group.
A great read with interesting characters and excellent story-telling.
