Day 01 – Your favourite series of books (with more than 3 in the series)
I’ve read a lot of books over the years: science fiction, fantasy, detective, thriller, horror and even (ahem) paranormal romance.
A few that come to mind (most recent and working approximately backwards):
Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher – Wizard detective – found this via the short-lived TV series I watched on Netflix. Highly recommended.
Rachel Morgan by Kim Harrison – urban fantasy – Highly recommended.
Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell – Military SF – Highly recommended. Sorry to see it end.
Takeshi Kovacs by Richard Morgan – SF – Highly recommended. Sorry to see it end.
Anita Blake by Laurel Hamilton – started great, but crashed and burned into porn. Highly recommend the first seven books, but after that you’re on your own.
Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson – Fantasy – it was difficult to stick with the first book since the main character was an arse-hole, but the original trilogy is exceptional.
Dune by Frank Herbert – SF – The first book is arguably the greatest SF novel ever written and the rest of the series pale in comparison, but are very good compared to anything else.
John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs – Fantasy SF – though dated and the last couple of books were week, I still love this series.
I agree with I aim to misbehave that The Lord of the Rings doesn’t really count since it was actually a single novel, otherwise this would be no contest. However, with LOTR disqualified, there is still no contest. Though I may re-read many of these series in the future, I know that I’ll return to Arrakis again. I’ve read the entire series twice and the first four books multiple time, including the audio version which I also recommend.
