Movie Review: The Ugly Truth (4/5)
The Ugly Truth stars Katherine Heigl as Abby, the control freak producer of a local Sacremento Good Morning America style tv show and Gerard Butler as Mike, a Howard Stern type shock jock on the local access channel, explaining to the world that men are what they are and women shouldn’t waste their time trying to change them. Abby’s tv show is last in the ratings, so her boss hires Mike to boost the ratings and he certainly does.
The basic setup involves Mike as a degenerate Cyrano guiding Abby into a relationship with her next door neighbor. Of course, being a romantic comedy we know that in the end they will fall for each other, but getting there is a lot of fun. I enjoyed the way the film follows the standard tropes, but throws in a few original scenes that raise it above the rest of the pack. The scene between Abby and Mike in the hotel hallway near the end of the film was very well done.
This movie is NOT appropriate for children. There’s no nudity, but there is foul language and very sexual situations.
