Thune Amendment

July 22, 2009 at 11:54 pm

The Thune Amendment failed by 2 votes.  Indiana Senator Evan Bayh (D) voted for it, but Senator Richard Lugar (R) voted against it.

I went to Bayh’s website and left a msg thanking him for his support of our civil rights.  My msg:

Mr Bayh:
As a registered Republican, I often disagree with your political positions.  Because of this, I am compelled to thank you for your support of the Thune Amendment.  Your vote was consistent with the rights recognized by the Indiana Constitution and Hoosier values.
I am saddened and disappointed that our Republican Senator failed to acknowledge our right to keep and bear arms secured by both the second amendment and the Indiana Constitution.
Thank you.

I went to Lugar’s website and found out that he is also supporting Sotomayer’s nomination to the US Supreme Court.  My msg:

Mr Lugar:

I am deeply troubled by your support of Ms Sotomayer’s appointment to the US Supreme Court.  In testimony, she clearly stated that she does not accept that a right to self-defense exists since the USSC has failed to issue a decision “creating” such a right.  This noxious failure to understand the very nature of natural rights, nor the Bill of Rights role in securing, not creating these rights, demonstrates that she is not qualified to sit on the highest court.

Your support of Ms Sotomayer, in conjunction with your vote against the Thune amendment, leads me to believe that perhaps you, yourself, do not recognize that the right to self-defense forms the very basis upon which all other rights depend.  Lacking a right of self-defense, of what value are freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly, etc.

The United States is not and has never been a nation of victims, but a “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Please reconsider your faulty position.  The Republican Party has already abandoned any pretense of fiscal discipline.  Do not abandon the founding Principles of this fine country.  Inalienable rights (life, liberty and pursuit of happiness) are the lifeblood that formed this nation and led it through the Revolution and the Civil War into the greatest nation on earth.

Do not let these principles perish.

Ok, I got a little carried away with the rhetoric on that second one, but he really irritates me.  If any Republican runs against Lugar in his next primary, I will contribute and support you.
